Sightseeing on Kefalonia

Sightseeing places of Kefalonia - Make sure you do not miss any of them

This guide offers a brief description to the main Sightseeing places and towns on the island to help you making the most suitable choice.

Kefalonia (Landmark Visitors Guides) Kefalonia & Ithaka. Kefalonia-Itliaca (Maps of Greek Islands) Kefalonia (Walk & Eat) (Walk & Eat)
Captain Corelli's Mandolin [2001]

Starting from the Capital Argostoli, the resorts are listed in an anti-clockwise order around the island.

Driving times vary but most journeys will take less than 1 hour with the longest trip - South of the Island area up to Fiscardo- taking around 2 hours. This time scale will allow you plenty of time to sight see and to drive at an appropriate speed that will enable you to safely avoid any untoward happening such as :- goats, cows and dislodged rocks on the road and the rather too often habit of Greek Drivers wanting your side of the road!

ARGOSTOLIA
I
s the capital town it houses all the Administrative offices for the island and has the largest number of shops, banks and tavernas than any of the other towns. The islands bus network appears to radiate out from its recently re-vamped Bus Station opposite the Lagoon.

The Main square and pedestrianised Lithostrata are the places to see and to be seen in in the evening. There are no beaches as such but nearby Lassi has more than enough to make up for it. The main harbour front provides outlets selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fish and moorings for some visiting yachts and “Gin” palaces from time to time!

LASSI
Lassi lies fairly close to Argostoli and has a number of fine sandy beaches. Most have taverna/kiosks providing food and drink and one has provision for Water- Sport activities. The main street of Lassi has numerous Tavernas, shops, Supermarkets,Car Hire,Tour operators and currency exchange offices. Car parking facilities are more than adequate.

MELLISANI UNDERGROUND LAKE
Melissani is a steep-sided cave (3.5 km long, 40m wide and 36m high) where its salt waters fed by the stream that disappears underground at Argostoli. The water is a gorgeous deepblue and the boatmen enteraining.

Melissani lake was discovered in 1951 by the speleologist Gianni Petrochilo. Later a major part of the roof collapsed, revealing a marvelous view. At the lake's rock formation - referred to as the "island" is where the great archeologist Spyridon Marinatos discovered the sanctuary of Panas, which findings were few but very sgnificant and have been moved to Argostoli's Archeological Museum.

The grotto is host to stalactites and stalagmites over 20000 years old. Tours are conducted by boat.

SKALA
Large enough to have some life with a varied selection of shops, tavernas, bars and cafes . The beach is long and narrow and mostly of sand. Good Water sport facilities and even small boat hire.

POROS
Although not large by any means this town is attractive and the compact shopping area provides for most things including Motor Fuel and automated Cash Dispensers. The beach is conveniently just across a promenade from the shops but it is rather narrow and mainly shingle. There is also a port area providing services to Killini ( on the Mainland), Lefkas and , if running, daily service to Zakinthos (Zante).

SamiA
Busy working port with ferries arriving from numerous locations including Italy. Plenty of shops and tavernas set around a beautiful harbour front with recently completed yacht moorings. Not much of a beach but nearby Anti-Samos is just breath-taking.

FISCARDO
Picturesque fishing village and yachting centre located at the top end of the island. A long drive up from the South but well worth it. Great ambience created by the boat crews and plenty of little gift shops to investigate. Pre-earthquake buildings are readily observed from the quayside. Daily ferry service to Lefkas. Small boat hire facilities operate from a number of locations around the harbour area.

ASSOS
Natural beauty spot on the neck of a Peninsula topped by a Venetian Fortress. Only a small village but has everything to create a good and relaxing atmosphere. No beach as such – nearest is Myrtos.

LIXOURI
Located on the Paliki Peninsula almost directly opposite Argostoli. This is the second largest town on the island and was, infact, once the islands Capital. It is a working town with a beautiful seafront promenade providing a good Greek atmosphere. Ferries run from this sea frontage every hour to Argostoli and back. There is a small boat marina but no beach. Nearest ones are Lepada/Xi.
