The prefecture of Chania or Hania is the westernmost of the four prefectures of the Greek Island of Crete. Its capital is the beautiful town of Chania where modern, Venetian, Turkish and traditional architecture are blended together in a perfect harmony, creating a unique and attractive picture. Archaeological Museum This is an old church, much beset by time but with an agreeable garden and appealing fountain. Exhibits, running roughly clockwise through time, feature most prominently a Minoan progression from western Crete, including important finds from Kastelli. In the centre are the fine tombs found in Armeni, near Rethymno. (closed on sundays) Historical Museum An extensive collection portraying the islands folkloric history. Includes memorials of the statesman Venizelos, intimately associated with Chania, and of the struggle for independence which he brought at last to a successful conclusion. (closed on weekends) Naval Museum Models, photographs and an interesting display of naval history. (open from May to September, closed on mondays) Chania port Market hall  Akrotiri The name Akrotiri means Penninsula. The city's airport is roughly at its centre. From the Profitis Ilias you can have a magnificent view back over Chania. There is also the grave of Eleftherios Venizelos, staesman and the architect of the islands unity with Greece. From here, the turning north leads on past Kalathas to Stavros, where you can fin the beach with the steep fall of mountains which are shown in the final scenes of the film version of Zorba the Greek. Samaria Gorge This is an excursion that many will want to make, since the gorge is extremely beautiful. The descent of the gorge is a long 10 Miles, hard on the legs and knees and demanding good footwear. The gorge is open only from May to October because of the fierce flas-flooding that can occur. Samaria gorge Souda This long deep-water inlet, with a fortified island at its mouth and Akrotiri to the north, has for many centuries been the main anchorage and the centre of naval power on Crete, just as it is today. The large and poignant Allied War Cemetery is at the base of the bay.
